January 30 - Genesis 39:1-41:16, Matthew 12:46-13:23, Psalm 17, Proverbs 3:33-35

Genesis 39:1-41:16

  • God working through awful circumstances
  • Potiphar's wife - more trials for Joseph with still more to come.  Its not easy and never simple
  • Dreams - how do you feel about what dreams say to us?  Does God speak through dreams still today?  When have you had a dream that was significant?  Ask me about the mountain lion sometime...

Matthew 12:46-13:23

  • Jesus redefines family here.  "Chosen" family and not just "born-into" family
  • Matthew shifts into a parable section.  Do you notice the patterns in Matthew thus far?
  • Parable of the sower - try reading this thinkign about the different parts
    • The sower - generous, a bit crazy, not caring about scarcity
    • The seeds - what do you think about the seeds' experience
    • The soil - often this is where the interpretation centers.  But how does it change with thinking about the other parts of the story?
  • Purposes of the parables - lisening and learning in different ways?  Maybe not saying here that it is about confusing but different ways that people learn and grow?

Psalm 17 and Proverbs 3:33-35

  • Psalm 17 - Bold declaration to God.  Doesn't feel like a lament as much as a "Here's where I am at and here's what I need from you God."
  • Proverbs 3:33-35 - Pay to play?  Reward vs punishment thinking
