January 27 - Genesis 32:13-34:31, Matthew 11:7-30, Psalm 14, Proverbs 3:19-20

Genesis 32:13-34:31

  • Wrestling story - was it an angel?  Was it God?  Someone/thing else?
  • There's a literal meaning here and a figurative one. On the figurative side, I love how this story notes that when we encounter God, we are marked and we are changed.
  • Note the grace of Esau - no reason he had to be grace-filled with Jacob but he is.  A lesson in there for us
  • Story of Dinah - Horrible story.  No way of trying to explain it away.  It is a horrible story from start to finish.  What happened to her and then the actions taken after.  What does this story stir in you?  What about justice like we read here?

Matthew 11:7-30

  • Notice that Jesus doesn't criticize John for his quesiton but honors him, celebrates him etc.  But John is lifted up as a bold prophetic voice
  • We're moving into "tough Jesus" territory in Matthew.  This is not the warm fuzzy Jesus.  This is a very different sense.
  • Which Jesus do you lean towards?

Psalm 14 and Proverbs 3:19-20

  • Psalm 14 - Notice how much this one sounds like something from Proverbs
  • Proverbs 3:19-20 - Note here that wisdom, divine presence is from the beginning.  Note how the translators change things here.  Up to this point, Wisdom was capitalized and personified.  Here, we're back to lower-case and not-personified.  What would happen if we did read this as Wisdom being present from all eternity?
