January 13 - Gen 3:1-4:26, Matthew 2:13-3:6, Psalm 2, Prov 1:7-9

Genesis 3:1-4:26

  • A theme that came up for me is that we're still dealing with some of the same things
  • Shame - After A&E eat the fruit, they were ashamed and sought to cover up their shame both literally and figuratively.  We're still dealing with the power of shame in our lives (see Brene Brown's writings on shame especially!)
  • Care for Others - Cain's "Am I my brother's keeper?"  We are still asking that question- - how much of our lives is about individuality and how much is about our responsibility to each other?
  • In the story of Cain and Abel - notice that Cain's response to God is not speaking back or responding to God's question but taking Abel out and murdering him.

Matthew 2:13-3:6

  • This story feels like the beginnings of a second exodus.  It is another Joseph going down to Egypt and returning with a new Moses.
  • Massace of the children - the story that is often overlooked or ignored in the Christmas stories.  But it is a part of the story of the magi and can't be left out.  One thing here for me is that it is a reminder that time and time again when rulers have their power threatened, they act in horrible ways.  History shows this here and time and again.

Psalm 2 and Proverbs 1:7-9

  • Psalm 2 - The emotions / affect I saw in this was both a humility before God and also a confidence in God.  How do these go together?
  • For Proverbs 1:7-9 - The feat of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge or wisdom.  What does this mean in practicality?  Staritng place for all knowledge?
