January 17 - Genesis 13:5-15:21, Matthew 5:27-48, Psam 6, Prov 1:29-33

Genesis 13:5-15:21

  • I love the statement - lift up your eyes (or raise up your eyes).  It is such a beautiful sense of expansiveness and seeing the bigger thing than just looking down
  • Notice that the "religion" of the day is not yet fully formed.  It is still a work in progress.
  • The covenant ceremony - this is patterend after what was known as a Suzerain Treaty ceremony from ancient times.  The key thing is that normally, the one who is the subordinate would be the one going "through the pieces."  Notice it is God who does that to meet Abram.

Matthew 5:27-48

  • Again, I refer to the videos from the Bible Project but especially in this part notice how each "command" Jesus gives gets harder.  So much harder

The Bible Project has a bunch of videos abou tthe Sermon on the Mount.  There's an introduction and then several that go into specific parts.  Best thing would be just to link to their youtube playlist of them.

  • Proverbs 1:29-33 - Notice how much of this is the choices that we make
