ReSounding Joy Resounding, Ministry Night, and Praying for Peace

As the hymn says, "My Lord what a Morning!" Friends, ResoundingJoy resounded out on Easter Sunday. We resounded with joy. We resounded with community. We resounded with welcome. We resounded with energy. We resounded with numbers. We resounded with praise. We resounded with the Easter greeting that Christ is risen // Christ is risen indeed! It was a remendous morning - thank you to all who helped and served in various ways, thank you to all who were here, thank you to all who invited and brought new folks, thank you. God is at work here friends. God is at work.
This is the first of three messages you'll be getting this week - today is sending out the April issue of ReSounds (print version will be available at church later this week), a reminder about Ministry Night tomorrow and hinting at the summer. There is also a prayer at the end for peace as, if you are like me, the war in Iran is on your heart and mind.
Tomorrow will be an update about Pillar of Truth, our Ethiopian friends. And Thursday will be an all-Missions/Outreach message.

Ministry Night and Looking to the Summer

We moved the April Ministry Night from last Wednesday (Holy Week) to tomorrow night - 6pm. Hope to see many of you there for helping with our various core ministry areas - worship, discipleship, fellowship/fun, administration, and mission/outreach. If you haven't been there before, don't let that be an excuse to not be there. Several of the teams will be working together on what we will be focusing on for the summer - Connecting with one another and with our community around tables - meals, conversations, and more - following the table examples of Jesus. A way to think about this summer is from the wisdom from Rachel Held Evans when writing about what the church ought to be building...she simply wrote, "let's build bigger banquet tables."
Praying for Peace

Friends, my heart is heavy about so much in our world right now but notably today about the war in Iran that is taking place and that has received threats of a massive escalation yesterday and today. I have been holding to the beginning of Psalm 46 today...
God is our refuge and strength,
a very present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change,
though the mountains shake in the heart of the sea;
though its waters roar and foam,
though the mountains tremble with its tumult.
But as I read this for myself, it is too each to read it as simply a promise for me, so I have been changing it today as I have been praying it.
God, you are the refuge and strength of all people
You are the very present help in trouble
Therefore, help us to not fear even as bombs fall and threats escalate
Though the Alborz and Zagros mountains shake
Though the waters of the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz are troubled
Though the world is on edge
God, you are the refuge and strength of all people
As many of you know, I also like to pray with images and the image above is one that I am praying as well. In this image, peace right now feels like that flowered branch reaching out - it is beautiful, it is life giving, it is restorative. But right now, it feels largely disconnected from the paths and the ways that our world is acting. So I am praying for peace to emerge and connect - a restorative, and a hopeful, and a lasting peace - not only between nations and within nations, but within the hearts of leaders across the world and the peoples of all nations.
And i want to close with the words of Pope Leo from his Easter message two mornings ago.
On this day of celebration, let us abandon every desire for conflict, domination, and power, and implore the Lord to grant his peace to a world ravaged by wars and marked by a hatred and indifference that make us feel powerless in the face of evil. To the Lord we entrust all hearts that suffer and await the true peace that only he can give. Let us entrust ourselves to him and open our hearts to him! He is the only one who makes all things new.
Grace, Peace, Love, Hope, and Joy,
Pastor Ed
